fans. good morning and welcome to "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> we are gearing up for that. it was very fun to watch. let's begin with meteorologist bill henley and your first alert weather center, find out your forecast for this friday. bill? >> there are a few lingering showers this morning. you won't find them in allentown or philadelphia but to the south across delaware and south jersey, showers and a thunderstorm. this thunderstorm popped up just as it was exciting ken the county, heading across delaware bay. it may hold together for cape may county. to the north, that's scattered light shower activity that's moving through south jersey. it's staying to the south of philadelphia for now. there are a few sprinkles in the wilmington area and into gloucester and southern camden counties at this hour. we're not going to see an all-day rainfall and we'll get sunshine. in fact, a lot of sunshine in store for the lehigh valley, which is seeing skies clear out right now. 73 at 8:00. by 11:00, an isolated shower is possible. i think it's less likely in the
lehigh valley than parts of the rest of the area. it's dry in philadelphia and this afternoon, into the 80s. 81 degrees, partly sunny skies in new jersey at the shore. scattered showers especially to the south this morning in cape may county. 74 degrees. you may have to deal with a few isolated showers during the day. you'll also need your sunglasses. these clouds will be clearing out this afternoon. and the weekend, that's looking pretty nice, too. your weekend forecast when i'm back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching first alert traffic. >> we're watching the boulevard around 17th street. not a lot of cars on the roads yet. it's still early to see a lot of that normal volume and backup. both directions on the boulevard, north, southbound, looking just fine. if you're headed to the schuylkill expressway from the boulevard, you'll be just find. in west chester, there's a downed tree around 322 around pottstown pike. and no big problems on route 73.
we did have construction earlier in the week on either side. now you can see empty, at least for this friday commute. you'll be just fine on 73 right now. more updates when i come back. we're following breaking news from overseas this morning. britain is leaving the european union. and the british prime minister who favored staying in the eu is leaving office. people in the uk woke this up morning to learn they will no longer be linked to the rest of europe when it comes to trade, business and politics. the eu referendum had an immediate impact. the british pound plummeted on kerns the vote will hurt their globalç standing. british prime minister david cameron announced he will resign by this fall. >> the win of the british people is an instruction that must be delivered. it was not a decision that was taken lightly. >> let june 23rd go down in our history as our independence day!
>> britain's decision shattered the experiment in european unity among 28 nations that began just after world war ii. the markets are reacting quickly and strongly. prices plunged as soon as it appeared that the vote in the uk would be close. the asian markets, the market in tokyo lost 8% of its value. u.s. futures also dropped. cnbc will help us take a closer look on what to expect on wall street today, how it will impact you following the historic brexit vote. the mother of the 4-year-old girl shot and killed in her north philadelphia home has been answering questions at police headquarters throughout the night. many of the details of the shooting remain unclear at this hour. the 4-year-old was shot in the head in a bedroom in the house. on north 20th street yesterday afternoon. police say the girl's 3-year-old
sister and her mother were in the home but they won't say who pulled the trigger. other family members were nearby and rushed to the scene and the e.r. the victim's cousin struggled to talk about the last time he saw her. >> i was playing with her, you know, i was watching her. >> investigators have the gun and are looking into it. they're also waiting on an autopsy. a local victim of the terror attack in orlando will be laid to rest today. family and friends will remember akyra murray. she was the youngest victim of the mass shooting, just 18 years old. murray graduated from west catholic prep a week before the massacre. after serving 21 years in congress, representative chaka fattah has announced his immediate resignation. that was yesterday. earlier this week, he had said he would stay in office until he's sentenced in october. but fattah said he didn't want to be a distraction to the work of his fellow lawmakers.
tuesday he was convicted of racketeering, fraud and money laundering. governor tom wolf will decide whether to call a special election to fill fattah's seat. pennsylvania senator bob casey testified for the prosecution during the trial. casey spoke to us yesterday. >> when someone has those kinds of charges leveled against them and they're convicted of those charges, they have to be held accountable. it damages our system when one elected official is engaged in any kind of corruption or other activities which are illegal. >> philadelphia republicans released a statement following fattah's resignation. the chairman of the city's republican party said, quote, after decades of serving himself and not the people of the 2nd congressional district, the least he could do is resign immediately after his conviction, end quote. and governor tom wolf will have to call for a special election within the next nine days that election would take place 60 days later. two suspects from lehigh valley arrested with an arsenal
near the holland tunnel in south jersey are getting support. they claim they were on a mission to save a teenage girl trapped in a heroin house. armor and a loaded asalt rifle in their truck earlier in the week. prosecutors charged them with weapons violations. friends said the driver merely forgot to unload his vehicle. >> every time he's gone on one of these rescues, there was never any firearms. they were going there to help. they were going there to rescue. they had their hearts into it. nothing else. >> the friends are now organizing a fund-raiser to pay the suspect suspects' legal bil let the ben simmons era begin. the 76ers will announce ben simmons later today. they took him first in the nba draft. you're looking at the big moment in brooklyn yesterday just after it happened. he put on a 76ers hat as he made
his way to the podium to receive congratulations from nba commissioner adam silver. how about that excitement? sixers fans going wild as soon as they saw and heard the selection last night. after a string of disappointing seasons, they are hoping simmons will help spark an era of winning basketball. >> better days round the ben? very clearly fans took over eakins oval for the sixers draft party last night. they are hoping the lsu star can draw more people to the wells fargo center center. >> hopefully he'll bring excitement and get people out to see some of the games. >> the fact that he built up 25 pounds of muscle, the guy's going to work hard. i think it change the whole team. >> how excited are you for this coming up year? >> i'm very excited. >> sixers legend allen iverson also joined the party last
night. you'll hear from him and top draft pick ben simmons coming up in the next half hour. sixers fans, we want to hear your thoughts. follow us on twitter so you can join the conversation. our address is right there on the screen. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> eight minutes after 5:00 on a friday morning. we have lingering clouds and a few lingering showers as well in delaware in south jersey. that's the live view from cape may marina. see some breaks in the clouds, not going to be completely cloudy today. partly sunny skies, the farther north you go. there's a chance of scattered isolated showers this afternoon. a comfortable evening ahead. the humidity will be coming down, the temperatures will be dropping from the 80s this afternoon. they are dropping, before sunrise, 65 degrees in the lehigh valley. the suburbs, 64. delaware is at 70 degrees. low 70s right now in philadelphia. some scattered showers in south jersey.
and the shore, 72 degrees right now. but there are some cooler spots by a couple degrees inland, upper 60s right now in mullica township and cape may county, 69 degrees. 70s for the shore this afternoon. so not a huge warmup. you still have to deal with some of these. some scattered showers and we're watching one thunderstorm that's moving right across delaware bay right now, that's heading towards cape may. these showers are heading due east. that's heavy rain. the lightning is starting to settle down. the steadier, heavier showers are on track to head through central and southern cape may county in the next half hour. we're on track for lots of sunshine this weekend. yes, a chance of isolated showers for new jersey and delaware this afternoon and at the shore. valley. it should be dry but this weekend, bright sunshine for all. 86 degrees in philadelphia. at the shore, 76 degrees. low 80s for delaware and new
jersey on saturday and sunday, upper 80s to near 90 degrees in the lehigh valley. the upper 70s for the jersey shore. a nice weekend ahead, but there are still a few showers to deal with this morning. ten-day outlook will take you through not only this weekend but next weekend when i'm back in ten minutes. >> i always liked that. >> a good weekend for the shore as well. time to get a look at traffic and area roads as you head to work. >> including 202, first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has that. >> right on 202 near 401. we look great. not a lot of cars out on the roads. this is pretty much what our majors look like right now. there are some areas cleaning out of the way. some cars making their way out the door. no problems in either direction. same goes for 95. we typically see delays on 95 over the next hour or so. not yet. southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, a 13-minute trip, no problems headed northbound. over the bridge into new jersey,
though, there is construction. route 130 between 322 and route 44. that's ongoing work as well. this is route 73 in cherry hill around kings highway. no big problems or delays and all traffic moving along just fine. roads are also dry. tracy? a stolen car leads police on a wild chase. >> you got it, brother, you got it. as you can see, a dashcam ra caught it all. the chase and the crash. find out what police finally had to do to stop and subdue the driver. today is the final day for a special camp for kids in montgomery county. we'll take you to camp freedom. fios is not cable. we're wired differently.

we got him in sight. yesterday police in florida spotted a stolen car they've been looking for since tuesday. catching it proved difficult. the driver hit the gas, led officers on a highway chase. a police car even slid sideways during the pursuit. the officer driving is okay. the chase ended moments later. >> he's wrecking. he's wrecking. >> he's going to try to keep going. let's see what happens. >> police said they had to tase the driver to get him under control. he faces a list of charges. new this morning, a tractor-trailer collided with a car at broad and walnut in center city. the car ended up underneath that
trailer. the man was driving the car and a female passenger in the back seat, the driver was shaken up and taking to the hospital. happening today, kids will enjoy one more day at a special montgomery county camp. it has all the popular outdoor camp activities and serves as a safe haven for kids managing diabetes. matt delucia is live in schwe s schwenksville to give us a look at camp freedom. >> the thing about this camp is that all these kids have something in common, they have diabetes. and whereas in school they might be one of a handful of kids who have it, this is all about bonding over a single diagnosis. take a look at video here. this is where we were about a couple days ago. we were showing you this camp freedom run by the american diabetes association. they've been going this now for 16 summers, about 185 campers are here. they are counselors and nurses making sure the kids are eating

afternoon. those clouds are producing some showers in delaware. cloudy view. we've seen a few sprinkles in wilmington. that's the view from frawley stadium. right now, the temperatures have dropped into the 60s and low 70s. it would be cooler without the clouds but with the clouds in place, we're getting that warmer start this morning. that's true of lewes and lincoln as well. 80s this afternoon. but the showers are going to be lingering into the late morning hours for delaware and south jersey. there are heavier downpours. one just moving into northwestern kent county. this could turn into a thunderstorm that's heading towards the smyrna area. looks like the heaviest rainfall will fall just to the south of smyrna. the heavier shower and thunderstorm that's crossing delaware bay, right there, that is heading towards cape may. it's just minutes away from heading into southern cape may county right now. meantime to the north, it's already dried out. skies are breaking in allentown and we're looking dry right now
for montgomery and bucks county. there's still a chance of isolated showers this afternoon in chester county. you can see some of that activity is to the west right along the pennsylvania/maryland border heading due east. keep an eye on the sky. might need an umbrella briefly at times during the day today. futurecast shows the showers and thunderstorms later this morning. drying out at 3:00. there's still a chance of a pop-up shower in parts of the area, especially in the suburbs. can't completely rule it out in delaware and south jersey. most of the day it's going to be dry. this weekend, lots of sunshine. good timing here for the manayunk arts festival. temperatures warming into the 80s. we'll be in the 80s today, too, there's still a chance of a shower, 83 degrees this afternoon. by tomorrow and sunday, nothing but sunshine. the next round of showers will hold off until after the weekend. in fact, later on monday and into tuesday. tuesday it's going to be a hot

5:23. now to our jersey shore bureau, atlantic city is selling unused properties to the highest bidder to try to ease the city's financial troubles. >> $10,000. >> the city started yesterday by putting 120 properties up for sale including some prime waterfront land. what's been dubbed the great atlantic city real estate auction sold more than $1.7 million worth of property. next month the city will hold a separate sealed bid auction for bader field and another key plot of water front land just off route 30. volkswagen will pay more thonn $10 billion in settlements from an emissions cheating
scandal. most of the money would come to hundreds of thousands of car the average payment would, $5,000. last year, the automaker admitted rigging certain vehicles to pass emissions tests. rock band led zeppelin did not steal the opening riff to its classic "stairway to heaven." they were sued saying they stole is from a song called "taurus" from a band named spirit. we have more now on britain's decision to leave the european union and how it could have an impact on your money. landon dowdy is here with this morning's cnbc business news to break it down and the reaction to it. landon? >> good morning to you. it is a very historic day. as far as the markets go, there could be a lot of red arrows across the board on wall street as investors react to the uk vote to leave the european union.
they are pointing to the dow falling 400 points at the opening bell. similar reaction in asia and european markets as well. investors may move to u.s. treasury bonds or the dollar, so-called safe havens. lots of opinion polls going to the uk vote suggested that they would come out on top. now haves are caught on the other end of that trade and have to move quickly to adjust their portfolios lower. as far as individual investors go in 401(k)s, you're more than likely in this for the long haul and you shouldn't panic. the uk move out of the european union is not something that will happen immediately. it's a process. tracy, back over to you. >> all eyes will be watching
